Narragansett Wins Lifeguard Games After Final Showdown on Second Beach
The 2011 Lifeguard Games took over Sachuest Beach Saturday night, as Middletown lifeguards hosted teams from across the state for the final day of competition.
After the final night of the Rhode Island State Lifeguard Competition came to a close and final points were tallied on Second Beach in Middletown Saturday night, a clear victor emerged as Narragansett Lifeguards had outswam, outrescued, and outpaddled lifeguards from throughout the state.
Of the seven teams, Narragansett racked up 205 points, with Westerly in Second Place with 184 points and Scarborough with 125 point.
In their final showdown on Second Beach, the seven teams came together for one last hurrah with four events: the Unassisted Swim, Surf Rescue, Women’s Relay and the finale event of the season, the Tug-o-War.

Competition was fierce, with some very gifted athletes going head-to-head.
“These are very competitive races and we have full scholarship, division one athletes competing in the games,” said Lifeguard Games Moderator, Jeff Lenihan, who has been running the event for the last 11 years and competing for 29. “This year was great, it ran very smoothly and I think the competitors had a lot of fun. Though the races are intense once they’re over I see a lot of camaraderie between the teams.”
