Girls' Soccer Team Wins 5-2
The Patriots' girls soccer team defeat the visiting team Tuesday night at Portsmouth High School.

The rain sprinkled down all day long Tuesday. By the time 7 p.m. rolled around, the Portsmouth High School soccer field was slick and saturated from the dismal weather.
But who says soccer games can't be won in cold and wet conditions?
The Patriots girl's soccer team proved that a little rain isn't going to slow them down this season as they defeated Smithfield Tuesday night by a score of 5-2.

The story of the night was Kim Sullivan's hat trick in the first half. Portsmouth came out energized as Sullivan rocketed a nice pass from Ashley Blaess into the back of the net.Â
Only a few minutes later, Sullivan booted another goal and this time it was Mariah McManus who was credited with the assist to give Portsmouth a 2-0 lead early on.

Smithfield proved that they weren't going down without a fight when Courtney Maguire scored to cut the lead in half. However, it was Sullivan again who answered with a third goal, this time assisted by Megan Sewall, to complete the hat trick and gain what would also prove to be the game-winning goal.Â
Accentuating the first half offensive production for Portsmouth, Sewall added her own goal after an outstanding individual effort to cut past the Smithfield defenders and put Portsmouth up 4-1 as the half came to a close.
The second half wasn't packed with as much action as the first, but Courtney Maguire gave Portsmouth fans a scare when she notched her second goal of the game to cut the Patriot lead to 4-2.Â
However, it was an effort that proved to be in vain as Mariah McManus lifted a beautiful shot that deflected off of the crossbar and into the net to give Portsmouth the 5-2 victory.
With the win Tuesday night, Portsmouth moves to 6-2-1. Smithfield falls to 7-5 overall.Â
The next time the Portsmouth Girls take the field will be this Thursday at home against South Kingston High School at 7 p.m.
