Police Log: Man Allegedly Brings Butcher Knife On RIPTA Bus Ride

  • A Cranston man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly carried a butcher knife onto a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus. Police were contacted by RIPTA about two men on a bus, which was stopped at West Main Road and Kings Charles Drive. The men were allegedly peeing and drinking alcoholic beverages on the bus. One of the two men left the area before police arrived. The second man, Ronald Cook, 22, of Cranston, remained on the bus. A butcher knife was found hidden under a shirt sleeve, police said. Cook was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and possession of a weapon other than a firearm. He was transported to the police station, held overnight, arraigned and later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) in Cranston. 
  • Alexander Alvarnas, 19, of 77 Sisson Pond Road, Portsmouth, was arrested Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and charged with possession of alcohol by a person under 21. Police were called to check a vehicle in the upper parking lot at the former Elmhurst Elementary School. Two men were inside the vehicle, which was operated by Alvarnas. Police say they located a 30-pack of Budweiser beer in the rear of the vehicle under a seat, as well as an open bottle of Budweiser on the floor behind the operator. They also found a beer bottle in the map holder near the passenger seat. Alvarnas was released with a court summons. 
  • Benjamin Peel, 26, of Bristol, was arrested Monday at 12:45 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence (DUI). Police stopped a vehicle on Boyd's Lane at Anthony Road for allegedly speeding and drifting into the opposite traffic lane. Police detected a strong aroma of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Peel apparently failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to the police station, allegedly failed a chemical test.
