Portsmouth man allegedly throws woman into wall

A Portsmouth man was arrested and charged Tuesday in connection with an argument occurring more than a month ago.

, 45, of 208 Water St., was arrested at 5:35 p.m. at the police station and charged with domestic, simple assault.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred on Feb. 5, when Atkinson apparently became involved in an argument with a 40-year-old Portsmouth female.

During the argument, Atkinson allegedly grabbed the woman and threw her against a wall. The victim sustained bruising on her shoulder and cuts on her elbow.

Police obtained an affidavit arrest warrant for Atkinson, who turned himself in at the courthouse on Feb. 16. However, according to police, Atkinson did not visit the police station for processing until Tuesday.

"Typically, after court, they are supposed to come immediately to the police station," said Lt. Brian Peters.

Immediate processing is usually a condition of bail, Peters said. However, this wasn't the case for Atkinson for reasons unknown.
