“While the SAT is just one snapshot of a student’s readiness for college, it is viewed as an important source of data by college admission offices," Littlefield said. "We take our responsibility to prepare our students for competing in the world very seriously. For many students, improving SAT scores can provide a gateway to future learning opportunities.”
Littlefield had high praise for the 2011 graduates. “Of course, we knew the Class of 2011 was a talented group. They were also the highest performing class in the state on the NECAP science assessments," he said.
He went on to cite the work of teachers in preparing Portsmouth High students.
“These SAT scores reflect our commitment to teaching problem solving skills and critical thinking in our math and science classes," he said. "There is a large team of educators at our school who should take great pride in this accomplishment. In the past few years, we have dedicated a great deal of professional time to allow teachers to work together in groups to develop common lessons and assessments.”
Of the 225 students who received diplomas in 2011, 79 percent took the SAT. One hundred and sixty-one students entered four-year colleges this fall while another 51 began their post-secondary education at a two-year school.
More than two million students took the SAT nationwide last year at more than 6,000 test centers world-wide.
