Portsmouth Middle School Baseball Wins 5-4 Against Middletown, Proceeds to State Title

The Portsmouth Middle School baseball team will now play against Feinstein Middle School of Coventry for the state title on Thursday, June 16, at 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field in West Warwick.

The boys' baseball team defeated Middletown's Gaudet Middle School 5-4 on Monday. The win has now earned the Portsmouth team a trip to the Rhode Island Principals' Committee on Athletics (RIPCOA) Middle School Baseball Championship.

On Monday, both teams fought hard for the win with a tied score of 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

Cam Sullivan of Middletown singled, stole second and moved to third on the throw. Johnny Agoros, after fouling off five consecutive pitches, laced a single to center scoring Sullivan from third, which gave Middletown a 4-3 lead, according to Kevin Weaver of Portsmouth Middle School.

In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Portsmouth began to mount its comeback.

Nick Prendergast was hit by a pitch. Ben McGuire then hit a double to left center putting runners on second and third. John Toppa was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Evan Criner then lined a double to left center, scoring Prendergast and McGuire, giving Portsmouth a 5-4 walk-off victory and an opportunity to play for the state championship.

For Middletown, Mark Loyola pitched seven innings and struck out five. For Portsmouth, Evan Moore walked two, struck out seven and gave up five hits.

Portsmouth will now play Feinstein Middle School on Thursday at McCarthy field in West Warwick. The game starts at 3 p.m.
