The Who, What and Where for Primary Day

Here's the 411 for primary day in Portsmouth. Voters are reminded to check their precinct number to find polling sites or visit the Secretary of State's Web site.

According to the Portsmouth Canvassing Authority, polls will open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 for the statewide democratic and republican primaries.

Registered voters should refer to their voter information cards to find their precinct number or the Secretary of State's Web site. In Portsmouth, there will be five polling locations. All polls will close at 9 p.m.

Polling site locations are listed below, according to precinct numbers.

For precinct # 2701, the polling site is located at:
Prudence Island Fire Station, 292 Narragansett Avenue, Prudence Island

For precinct  # 2702 and 2703:
Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Road

For  precinct # 2704 and 2705:
Common Fence Point Community Hall, 933 Anthony Road

For precinct # 2706, 2707 and 2708:
Portsmouth Town Council Chambers, Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road

For precinct # 2709, 2710 and 2712:
Aquidneck Island Christian Academy, 321 East Main Road

Voters will be choosing categories of representative for Congress, secretary of state, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, senator and representatives for the General Assembly according to district.

On the ballot this year, up for  Congress representative  in Dist. 1, the seat previously held by Patrick J. Kennedy, are Democratic candidates David N Cicilline, William J. Lynch, Anthony P. Gemma, and David A. Segal.

For Republican candidates, it's John J. Loughlin II versus Kara D. Russo. The chosen representative will serve a two-year term.

In the governor's race is Democrat Frank T. Caprio and Republican candidate John F. Robitaille up against Victor G. Moffitt for the primary.

Robitaille, a military veteran and small-business owner,  is a resident of Portsmouth.  According to Robitaille's press secretary, Michael Napolitano,  over the weekend Robitalle will be attending a number of events in the community.

"He makes an attempt to attend as many (events) as he can," Napolitano said.

These events will likely include  on Saturday the Cranston Greek Festival and the Rhode Island Rally for Recovery at Roger Williams Park. On Sunday, a Burriville fair and a Newport Vineyards wine tasting event.

Napolitano said Robitaille will be voting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, at the Aquidneck Christian Academy. They will watch the outcome of the primary from the Sheraton Hotel in Warwick at 7 p.m.

On the democratic ballot for lieutenant governor, incumbent Elizabeth H. Roberts will face Jeremy A. Kapstein. Republican candidate Heidi Rogers and Kara D. Russo will compete for a chance in the four-year term

Secretary of the State Democratic candidates are A. Ralph Mollis and Leonidas P. Raptakis, and republican candidate Catherine Terry Taylor.

Republican Erik B. Wallin is on the ballot for attorney general, and for the democratic ballot, Peter F. Kilmartin, Stephen R. Archambault  and Joseph M. Fernandez.

The candidates for the four-year term of general treasurer are Republican Kernan F. King and Democrat Gina M Raimondo.

The Senate seat candidate for Dist. 11 in the General Assembly  is Democrat Charles J. Levesque and Republican Christopher Scott Ottiano  for the two-year term

Portsmouth has 4 districts that candidates will be competing for General Assembly seats. 

Voters from precinct numbers 2709, 2710 and 2712  will choose from Dist. 72 representative in the General Assembly. Republican Daniel Patrick Reilly and democrat Amy G. Rice are running  for the two-year term.

For precinct 2701-2703 are Dist. 69 candidates Democrat Raymond E Gallison and Republican William L. Sousa Grapentine.

Democrat John G. Edwards and  Republican Nancy Drigs  are the candidates District 70 which brings voters from district 2704-2705.

For the  representative seat in Dist. 71,  voters from precinct 2706-2708, Democrat George S.Alzalbak and Republican Daniel P. Gordon are running.
