Things to Do in Portsmouth This Holiday Weekend

A look at the exciting events happening in your neighborhood this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

When not raking leaves this holiday weekend or soaking up those final rays of sunshine during an autumn walk, feel free to check out the following exciting events happening this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Columbus Day:

  • Just over the town line in Middletown, the Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) will hold a free movie showing this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Newport Vineyards and Winery, 909 East Main Road. The ALT will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a free showing of the 2006 film Miss Potter. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to cozy up with the ALT for a Friday night of movie magic for the entire family. In addition to the free movie screening, ALT will be kicking off its Young Friends Membership Program! The movie is free and open to the public.   • Anime at the Portsmouth Free Public Library will continue this Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The library will present this free program for teens. Two episodes each of Black Cat and Shakugan No Shana will be shown. For more information, please click here
  • Common Fence Music, now in its 18th season, presents a series of performances known as the Picnic Series each Saturday at 8 p.m. at Common Fence Music, 933 Anthony Road. Doors open at 7 p.m. For directions, click here. This Saturday will feature the musical stylings of Nora Jane Struthers & The Bootleggers, who describes their music as classic Americana. Tickets are $22 and available by clicking here. Tickets are also available at the Common Fence Music ticket desk in Portsmouth on Picnic Series concert days from 3 to 8 p.m., and during all concert intermissions.

  • Custom House Coffee will host its Open Mic night this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The event, hosted by Gary Fish, is free and open to the public. Featured performers will take the stage from 3 to 3:45 p.m. 
  • This Monday is Columbus Day. While schools are closed, as well as Town Hall, there are a few organizations still hosting events. On Monday, the Norman Bird Sanctuary will hold its Autumn Adventure! Autumn is an exciting time of year. Participants will take an up-close look at the many changes that happen in  the forest through hikes and games. Program Cost: Members - $40; Non-members - $50 Space is limited and registration is required.
