Town Council to Make Annual Visit to Prudence Island on Saturday

Road projects, the deer hunting season and the Prudence Island transfer station are on the agenda.

The Portsmouth Town Council will make a ferry trip to Prudence Island on Saturday for its annual Town Council meeting to address island-specific issues.

This time, the topics include an update on the Prudence Island roadway improvement projects, a discussion on the DEM’s recent decision to not extend the deer hunting season on the island and issues relating to the transfer station on the island.

The debate over extending deer hunting was rather controversial last year after the State Department of Environmental Management held an informational meeting on the island after receiving two petitions: one would have extended the hunting season by a month with an earlier opening date, the other was in opposition of such a move.

The DEM in May heard from more people opposed to the extension at a public hearing. Much of the concerns centered around the conflict between people visiting and enjoying the island for recreation and bow hunters.

In attendance was Glenn Young of the Portsmouth Police Department, who said that the department was opposed to starting the seasons a month earlier.
