USA Defeats Scotland in Polo 14-12

In its seventh consecutive appearance, the Scottish polo team put up a strong fight against Team USA.

It seemed as though Saturday’s polo match was going to be an easy one for Scotland, who scored twice against Team USA in the first two minutes. The sun was shining on the historic  and the field was packed with an audience cheering on both Team USA and Scotland alike.

In its seventh consecutive appearance, the Scottish polo team learned how strong the team from the USA was, as they quickly came back with a goal at the five minute mark of the first chukka and another goal at the 4:30 mark.

In the second chukka, both teams scored again and Newport pulled ahead with six goals to Scotland’s five. After the fourth chukka,with 2:30 left, Newport hit its eleventh goal while Scotland had scored seven.

“We don’t usually see this many goals scored so early in the match,” said Newport resident Kim Paquette. “Hopefully the USA can hold Scotland for a few more chukkas.”

Divot stomping is a long time tradition during the halftime of polo matches. While walking through the field the crowd appeared confident that Newport would dominate for the rest of the match. It came as  a surprise to fans in the fifth chukka when Scotland came back and tied the score with its eleventh goal and 1:30 left.

The match remained tied going into the sixth and final chukka. While Scotland managed to score one more goal, Newport pulled ahead and won the match with a final score of 14-12.

All matches are open to the public and take place on the polo grounds of Glen Farm in Portsmouth. The next match is this Saturday with the Newport team going up against against Boston.
