Woman Accused of Beating Her Husband With Bat May Have Been Abused

Neighbors say the 80-year-old Portsmouth woman charged with domestic felony assault may have been a victim of domestic violence.

The elderly Portsmouth woman, who allegedly attacked her 77-year-old husband several times over the head with a baseball bat, was arraigned in Newport District Court on Tuesday.

Filomena Tougas, 80, was arrested and charged with domestic felony assault at her home, 12 Kensington Ave., Saturday morning.

Tougas’ neighbors do not think she should have been arrested and said her husband, Renee Tougas, had dementia and was verbally and physically abusive to her, NBC 10 reported.
