Woman Arrested After Vehicle Crashes Into Telephone Pole

The following arrest information was supplied by the Portsmouth Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Portsmouth woman was arrested and a man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital following a head-on crash Sunday on Moitoza Lane. 

Police responded to the motor vehicle crash around 4:45 p.m. A car struck a telephone pole head-on.

The operator, Melissa Johnson, 19, of 34 Maize Corn Road, was uninjured. A 20-year-old man, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Newport Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police say Johnson standing outside the vehicle when they arrived. Police detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver.

Johnson failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to the police station, allegedly failed a chemical test.

She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
