Providence Police Department Adds 2 Draft Horses To Mounted Command Unit

Mounted officers support public safety efforts while fostering positive interactions at events and in neighborhoods across the city.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Providence Police Department has added two draft horses to its Mounted Command Unit.

The newest additions to the unit are Spencer, a 4-year-old dark bay Clydesdale, and Mick, a 5-year-old Belgian draft, according to a media release.

"The acquisition of the two mounts was generously sponsored by Terry Moran, a longtime supporter who has purchased numerous horses on behalf of the City of Providence," the release said, noting Spencer was named after his new grandson.

"The Mounted Command remains one of the most visible and effective tools we have for connecting with the community while enhancing public safety," Col. Oscar L. Perez, the Providence police chief, said in the release.

"Spencer and Mick will help us continue that mission by supporting patrol operations, special events, and community engagement efforts throughout Providence," Perez said. "We are grateful to Terry Moran for his longstanding generosity and commitment to ensuring the continued success of this unique and valuable unit."

The mounted command plays a "vital role in the department’s community policing mission, offering a highly visible and approachable presence that helps strengthen relationships between officers and residents," the release said.
