This past Saturday morning, while the temperatures where climbing to the 90s, Centers Health Care’s Rhode Island facilities including Bannister Center in Providence, Oak Hill Center in Pawtucket and Kingston Center in West Kingston was one of the big sponsors who came out to support Lifespan Cancer Institute’s third annual Rise Above Cancer 5K Walk/Run at City Park in Warwick, RI. This is part of Centers Health Care's, "Get Stronger" six-week summer campaign which is geared towards community togetherness.

All three facilities work closely with the Lifespan Hospital System and this year the race was to support Officer Edmond Malloy, a Providence police officer who has been fighting cancer for five years. The theme for this year’s race was “Malloy Strong” and a number of first responder teams came out as well.

All three of our Centers came out to support Officer Malloy and everyone who has been dealing with this terrible disease in Rhode Island,” said Carol Landreville, Centers Health Care’s Regional Director in Rhode Island. “We have a very close relationship with Lifespan Health System, so the least we can do is to have as many folks from our facilities come out and offer support to Officer Malloy and everyone else who want to get through this disease and live their lives.”

Even with a newborn daughter at home, Frank Little, Bannister Center's Rehab Director, didn't let the heat beat him by finishing in 2nd place in his category.

The Lifespan Cancer Institute includes cancer care provided by Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital and Centers Health Care's East Greenwich Ambulatory Care satellite office. Centers Health Care serves a significant portion of the cancer patients in the state of Rhode Island and surrounding areas.

Officer Malloy’s team has been continuously growing since 2014, the year the Officer learned of his cancer. According to Rhode Runner Walking & Running on North Main Street in Providence,, funds generated from the event will directly assist in offsetting treatment costs of patients currently undergoing cancer treatment. Financial distress is often experienced due to high out-of-pocket expenditures during treatment as well as from the necessity of taking time off from work.
