Police Chase Providence Man Across Multiple States Before Arrest

The "tense and unpredictable situation" began to unfold Friday evening, police said.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A 22-year-old Providence man is in custody and facing multiple charges after being chased from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, according to the Newton, Massachusetts Police Department.

The "tense and unpredictable situation" began to unfold Friday evening, when Emanuel Salmeron was first pursued by Rhode Island officers as he sped into Massachusetts via 1-95, after which the chase was continued by Massachusetts State Police before being halted when Salmeron exited the highway in Norwood.

Later, just after 6:30 p.m., Newton police officers were called to the Riverside MBTA Station parking lot, where Salmeron was found unconscious inside a red Mercedes. Soon, dispatchers made the connection between the earlier chase and the car in the parking lot.

As officers surrounded Salmeron's parked car, he attempted to flee the lot. Blocked from re-entering the roadways, Salmeron made his way to an access road before leaving the car and trying to run, but police soon cornered him.

"Their strategy and quick decisions helped preserve public safety and prevent any injuries to our officers and other motorists," the Newton Police Department wrote. "I am appreciative of our officers' bravery, as well as the patience and tactics exhibited by all officers involved ... This was an exemplary display of teamwork and professionalism."
