Providence Man Stabs Coworker In Head With Screwdriver

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Providence man has been arrested after being accused of stabbing his coworker in the head with a screwdriver after a physical altercation Monday night, Providence police told Patch.

Richard Gilbert, 57, showed up to work in Johnston while intoxicated and began to fight with the coworker before fleeing to Providence in a stolen company car as the co-worker followed him, according to police.

The stabbing occurred on Hartford Avenue in Providence after the suspect "attempted to flee again," at which point the victim tried to prevent him from getting back into the truck and the suspect grabbed a screwdriver from inside the truck and struck the victim in the head, police said.

Both Gilbert and the co-worker were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening, police said.

Gilbert was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a stolen car, though additional charges are to follow, both WJAR and ABC6 reported, citing Providence police.
