Shots Fired, Fights, Assaults Reported In Massive Providence Disturbance: Cops

PROVIDENCE, RI — A massive disturbance with reports of shots fired, fights and assaults broke out Halloween night right outside Providence College, police said.

About 1,000 were gathered on Eaton Street and "all surrounding side streets," shortly after midnight Friday, according to a police report.

An officer posted to the Providence College Detail at the intersection of Eaton and Radcliffe Avenue "observed a crowd of approximately 300 subjects in the middle of the street on Radcliffe Avenue and a disturbance break out shortly thereafter," the report said.

One man suffered a laceration to his forehead after he was assaulted by about 20 other men and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, according to the report.

Another two injured in attacks took themselves to Miriam Hospital, the report said.

One of the mob of attackers was spotted on a black scooter but he escaped on foot into the crowd before officers could catch him, according to the report.

"It should be noted that it took approximately 2 hours and more than 20+ Officers to finally disperse all the subjects which Police observed to be a mix of students and nonstudents," the report said.

One of the men treated at Miriam Hospital told officers about "four to five unknown male subjects wearing balaclava style facial coverings approached him, and struck him multiple times in the face as he fell to the ground," the report said.

The other told how he was hit in the "back of the head with a Don Julio Tequila bottle multiple times," according to the report.

He also said "he observed a tan colored firearm fall from one of the assailant's waistbands," according to the report.

"It should be noted while on scene Police received numerous calls for public disturbances, shots fired, loud music, large crowds and assaults relating to Eaton St.," the report said. "It should be further noted that no shell casings were recovered, and while on scene no gun shots were heard."

The crowd also jumped on a car to the point it sustained "extensive damage" and had to be towed away, according to the report.
