Founded in 2021 at the Native Arts Gallery in Mashpee, MA, the THUMP & SOUL SESSION has evolved and grown over the past few years. After moving to Gallery X in New Bedford in 2022, the event found its permanent home at the Underground Railroad Café in the spring of 2024, becoming a beloved monthly fixture in the city's underground music scene.

The THUMP & SOUL SESSION traces its roots to the underground dance music culture that first emerged in 1970s New York City, a vibrant era that gave birth to events like The Loft, Libations, and The Tea Party, which quickly spread throughout the East Coast and Midwest. As Mwalim explains, “We are in the tradition of gatherings like The Loft, Libations, The Tea Party, and B.A.A.D. in New York City; The Sanctuary in Washington DC; and The Loft, Club M, and Soul Revival in Boston.” This historical foundation continues to shape the THUMP & SOUL experience, blending timeless underground traditions with contemporary music culture.

WAMPTRONICA co-founder, The ZYG 808, emphasizes the enduring relevance of House Music, noting that "House Music is a genre built on traditions instead of trends." As a multi-generational community, underground dance music continues to attract new generations of dancers, DJs, and musicians, creating a culture of inclusivity and revival.
