World Refugee Day: Confronting Record Levels of Forced Displacement

On World Refugee Day, we reflect on the staggering rise in forced displacement around the globe. By the end of 2023, over 43.4 million people had become refugees due to conflict, persecution, and climate crises, with a significant 40% being children. Among these, 4.4 million were stateless, and approximately two million were born as refugees. In total, forced displacement had affected a record 120 million individuals by May 2024, including those trapped within their own countries due to ongoing conflicts in regions such as Gaza, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, Colombia, and Haiti.

A recent survey by the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) highlighted a troubling trend: support for refugees has waned in some Western and major host countries, influenced by security concerns and integration challenges often amplified by populist politicians and far-right groups. Despite this, many nations, especially low- and middle-income ones, continue to show remarkable solidarity, hosting 75% of the global refugee population.

Sudan illustrates the complexity of the crisis, with 10.8 million people displaced by the end of 2023, including 9.1 million internally displaced and 1.7 million refugees abroad. The civil war that erupted in April 2023 exacerbated the situation for a country already sheltering over a million refugees from neighboring countries. Many of these refugees have had to prematurely return to their conflict-ridden homes or seek refuge elsewhere.

The plight of Palestinian refugees remains dire, with 6.9 million under UNRWA’s mandate, including 1.8 million in Gaza. The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has resulted in over 80% of Gaza's population becoming internally displaced, seeking shelter from relentless attacks.

In Myanmar, over three million people have been displaced internally due to a prolonged civil war, with an additional 1.3 million refugees, predominantly Rohingya Muslims, living in precarious conditions in countries like Bangladesh. These camps face severe challenges such as insecurity, food aid cuts, and frequent deadly incidents, prompting many to undertake perilous journeys to Indonesia and Malaysia.

Afghanistan’s crisis has displaced nearly 10.9 million people, most of whom remain within the country or have sought refuge in neighboring Iran and Pakistan. Remarkably, three-quarters of all refugees under UNHCR’s mandate come from just five countries: Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, and South Sudan. Other nations with significant displaced populations include the DRC, Somalia, and Haiti.

This data underscores the urgent need for robust, compassionate policies and international cooperation to address the growing refugee crisis and to counteract the misinformation that threatens to undermine global solidarity.
