Need More Drawer Storage ?

Designing an efficient modular drawer storage cabinet.

Designing an efficient modular drawer storage cabinet isn’t difficult if you follow the right steps. By following the steps closely, you will be able to maximize the storage space available in any cabinet. We will focus our instructions on cabinets here; however, the same procedure works for drawers installed in shelving units. It’s important to note, though, that the maximum height of drawers in most shelving applications is 48”.

We use Rousseau Metal Products that are made in North America. All modular drawer cabinets and drawers-in-shelving manufactured by Rousseau use standard North American dimensions.

1. Determine Cabinet Height and Type of Base

While other heights are available, common height options are:

28” – Desk Height/34” or 30” – Bench Height/44” or 38” – Counter Height/58” – Eye Level

Common Base Options (add to overall cabinet height):

Standard base is a 2” high forklift-able base; adds 2” to overall cabinet height

Optional 4” high base, accessible by pallet jack, adds 4” to overall cabinet height

The cabinet can also be ordered without a base if there is limited vertical clearance

2. Decide on the Width and Depth of the Cabinet

Available Widths: 24”, 30”, 36”, 42”, 48”, 60”

Available Depths: 18”, 21”, 24”, 27”

Most common sizes are 36” or 48” wide X 24” deep (these sizes match standard North American shelving sizes)

Another common size is 30” wide X 27” deep; this is a close match to some metric measured cabinets

3. Determine Drawer Heights for your Products

Available Drawer Base Heights: 3” to 10”, 12”, 14” and Pull-Out Flat Shelves (base height is 3”). All drawers have 400# capacity with full extension, 100% of the drawer interior will be invisible.

Available space for drawers inside a cabinet is 4” LESS than your chosen cabinet height

For example, a 58” eye-level cabinet would have 54” of usable space for drawers, a 30” bench height cabinet with have 26” available. You can install any combination of drawer heights that make up available space.

Usable Height inside each drawer is 1” LESS than Face Dimension of each drawer. For best results, match the Usable Drawer Height as closely as possible to the size of the products stored in the drawer. Take a full review of your product sizes and quantities.

4. Which Insert Options do you want in each drawer? (If any.)

Partitions (fixed, front to back) and Dividers (adjustable, left to right) can be included as Internal Drawer Configurations. Other popular configurations are Bin Cups (designed to fit the drawer exactly), Groove Trays (for storage of long, thin products), PVC Drawer Liners or Foam Inserts used for protection or tool cut-outs.

Each drawer can have a different layout. Drawer compartment layouts are specific to the size of each drawer. Study the drawer compartment layout sheet for your chosen cabinet size.

For smaller parts and fasteners, our recommendation is bin cups in some of the 3” or 4” face drawers, instead of partitions and dividers. Bin cups are easier to pick from and can be removed for use at the workstation; they also make sorting or counting parts easier.
