Respect Week To Start At Smithfield High

Events to foster respect for oneself and others are this week's focus.

From Smithfield Schools: Respect week begins on Monday, November 27th at Smithfield High School. The school has planned a series of events focused on respect for oneself and others. The week kicks off with a presentation by Dr. Mary Grace Almandrez, Dean of Students for Brown University, who will speak on diversity.

On Tuesday, every Smithfield High School student is scheduled into 6 sessions for Respect Day. Approximately 15 community volunteers are facilitating sessions on topics ranging from stress management, mindfulness and nutrition to bullying prevention and sexual harassment.

The week concludes with Ending the Silence, a schoolwide assembly presented by representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, designed to bring awareness to Mental Health needs and supports. School administrators and educators planned the series of events to proactively address student social-emotional needs and to nurture a positive school culture. While many related topics are included either in the health curriculum or through advisory, the sustained focus on these areas during Respect Week communicates their importance to the school community.
