A Little Bit of Paradise: My Makeover at n’Style

I've come to the conclusion that every girl needs some pampering. It's not just about the physical beauty (although that's great too). It's also about the happy glow that women exude from doing something special for themselves.

Normally, I am not a regular at the spa. At most, I am lucky to make time to get my hair cut and styled. In fact, I used to go to the walk-in hair salons. However, in the past couple years I’ve upgraded to salons I can actually call and make an appointment ahead of time. That being said, I have never really treated myself to anything beyond a haircut. That fact alone made my trip to n’Style Salon and Spa all the more exciting.

What a joy for me to say I had the divine pleasure of enjoying a make-over day at n’Style Salon and Spa in Tiverton, RI! My hair was cut, colored and styled, my eyebrows were shaped, and make-up was applied. I felt like a model. You can see the before and after photos in this post.

Yes, the “before picture” is kind of embarrassing. I was way overdue for a cut and color and feeling kind of haggard when I arrived for the appointment. But that haggard feeling quickly departed as I entered the salon. Although the person at the desk was on the phone, she greeted me with a friendly smile and wave. Even though this was my first time at n’Style, I felt like a welcomed regular.

It turned out that the person at the desk was the owner, Roberta Medeiros. Roberta is not only great at what she does but she is also a “people person”….two attributes in the beauty business. As Roberta worked her magic on my hair I chatted with her about her salon. I learned several interesting things about n’Style.

- They are proud to use Aveda products which are good for you and the environment. In fact after purchasing a product I was told I could save money and the environment by reusing the container and just purchasing refills.

- They not only care about the environment but also about helping others. Roberta and her staff have raised money for and been in the American Heart Association walk for about two years.

- The Salon has been in business for seven years (it will be eight in March). In that time they have been voted “Best of” several times in publications such as The Herald and Rhode Island Monthly. In fact they recently found out they won another “Best of” award in the Rhode Island Monthly. All the winner’s of the RI Monthly readers poll will be announced this Thursday night at the Rhode Island Monthly's 18th annual Best of Rhode Island® Party, which is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Providence Performing Art Center. If you want a fun get-away be sure purchase your ticket and join n’Style there.

- Have you seen the show “What Not to Wear” on TLC? I happened to notice a picture at n’Style of Roberta with Nick Arrojo (hairstylist from the show). Roberta and her staff go to trainings and hair shows regularly. On one of those occasions Roberta had the pleasure of meeting Nick.

While getting my hair colored I also got to enjoy a hand massage. Customers get a hand massage with any chemical treatment or a scalp massage with any wash and cut. You also can enjoy a free cup of Aveda tea, ahh, more pampering.

After my cut and color was complete my next step was my eye brow waxing. Again, I am a spa novice. Usually my eye tweezing consists of me leaning over my sink squinting into a mirror with tweezers in hand. Who would have known how relaxing an eye brow wax could be? I was taken into a separate room with soft lighting and music. As I laid down, the aesthetician, Leslie Helger used low heat wax and a gentle touch to shape my eyebrows. She also ended with some lotion. What a relaxing experience.

Leslie then led me to the make-up chair. After asking some questions, she started with some liquid-powder make-up and a brow enhancing powder (I have to admit, I never heard of brow enhancing powder!). She then used illumination underneath my eyes and on the corner of my eye lid to, well, you guessed it, illuminate my eyes. She also used concealer which she indicated is an important step but many people forget to use it. Leslie used Aveda products on my eyes, cheeks and lips, finally finishing off the look with Aveda Inner Light loose powder.

While my make-up was complete, the owner, Roberta, was not done with me yet. She styled my hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic and Phomollien styling foam for some lift and staying power. She also added some gloss treatment called Full Spectrum. You can check out the pictures here to see the really healthy shine that product gave my hair.

Of course those are just a few of their services. You can check out what other salon and spa services they provide on their website.  They are also having a special this month: a make-up application is $25. You can find out about other upcoming specials in their monthly newsletters by sending an e-mail to nstylesalonandspa@gmail.com requesting to get on their e-list.

Roberta indicated that one of her customers described her salon as “a quaint salon with an upscale feeling." I would definitely agree. The tag line on the website for n’Style is “Tiverton’s best kept secret." I'm not sure if I agree with that. Since they've won "Best of Rhode Island" for the third consecutive year, I think their secret is getting out.

I’m looking forward to my next pampering at n'Style. Are you?
