Applications Due Soon For Tiverton Citizen's Police Academy

The curriculum begins in February and is taught by members of the Tiverton Police Department.

Applications for those looking to take the 's Citizen's Police Academy spring curriculum are due by the end of the year. The program begins on Feb. 8, 2012 and is taught by uniformed members of the department.

"It's an opportunity for the public to get to know its officers better, help protect the community and let them know the resources they have," said Cpl. Daniel Raymond, who is one of the instructors.

Participants will learn traffic enforcement, patrol techniques, various case law, accident investigation, crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, firearms training and more. Raymond said all applicants must be 18 years or older and a Tiverton resident. A background check is also required.

Raymond said the classes meet every Wednesday night for 10 to 12 weeks. It starts at , then moves to the police station. Defensive tactics are taught at , and the firearms training takes place at the .
