I am not a runner. In fact if you look at my about me page you will notice my least favorite cardio activity is running.
That being said due to peer pressure I signed up for my first 5k and stepped way outside my comfort zone.
Here is what I learned:

A great app to help you get started if you are not a runner is Couch to 5K. Taking the advice of my trainer at TKO Fitness I was skeptical until I tried it. It’s principle is to build endurance with intervals of walking and running. As the weeks progress you will be running more than walking.
Having a goal to work towards kept me motivated. Knowing that 5k was looming ahead kept me on track and made me get out there when I would have been more comfortable kickboxing instead.

Changing up a workout routine is good. Very good. I took a break from the kickboxing and after I had been running a couple of weeks I noticed I had lost some weight and things were firming up. Mixing up workouts keeps the body guessing and helps you from over training any one part.
Peer pressure is good. I had a support group to push me, talk with, exchange running tips with and laugh with (mainly about how they were going to have to help me across the finish line).
Race day was cold, windy, and filled with adrenaline. But I finished and felt pretty cocky and please with myself afterward. I had stepped out of the comfort zone and conquered that running demon. And I didn’t come in last.
The take away? Step out of your comfort zone and set a goal. Surround yourself with positive support and encouragement. Lastly challenge yourself and just go for it. That feeling of accomplishment is the best high in the world.
