What is a Security Guard?

Security guards protect people, places, and assets.  This is a paid job in which an individual is highly trained and is hired for something extremely important. Guard jobs are very popular and are usually hired through private companies.  Training is involved, and depending on the state you live in, the requirements and standards can change.

The typical security guard job consists of the following:

• Aiding in dangerous situations
• Stopping criminals
• Working with the police
• Helping in emergency situations

Depending on the job, security guards can be either armed or unarmed. They can be positioned inside a building or inside a security booth.

Are there jobs available?

Yes, there is a demand for these jobs; if you have the proper training you will have a good chance of finding a security job. There are private companies who will hire their own officers, and there are also security companies who will place you at different job sites.

Do I need a license?

 Some states like CA will require a license before you can get hired.  Most states do not require this, you can check online to see what your state standards are.

Weapons Training?

If you want to be an armed security officer, then you will have to go through a strict training.  You will be tested and will need to pass an exam before you can get a weapons permit.  Some of the tests involve, weapon knowledge and safety, as well as shooting the gun at a firing range. Being able to carry a weapon will open up more security job opportunities for you.  These armed employments usually come with a higher salary too.

Rhode Island regulations?

RI requires a license, even for unarmed security guards. You can apply for a license at the Office of The Attorney General. Here are the basic requirements:

• No felony convictions
• Be of good moral character
• Be a US citizens
• Be 18 years old
• Be Mentally competent
• No drug and/or alcohol abuse
• No disabilities

You will also have to submit to a criminal background check.
