
Amicable Congregational Church will present its next Monthly Speaker Series event, Inside Mental Illness, on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the church, located at 3736 Main Road, Tiverton, RI.
The event will address the realities of mental illness in Rhode Island, including the growing impact of anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and other disorders. Attendees will also learn about the stigma surrounding mental illness and the importance of education, compassion, and access
to care.
Rhode Island is facing a mental health crisis:
• 16,000 Rhode Islanders ages 12–17 experience a major depressive episode each year
• 10,000 Rhode Islanders ages 12–17 have serious thoughts of suicide annually
• More than 6,000 adults have serious thoughts of suicide each year
• 847 lives were lost to suicide in Rhode Island in 2025
Topics discussed during the presentation will include:
• The power of stigma in society and how to create change
• Personal stories that show hope and recovery are possible
• Discussions covering mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and thought disorders including schizophrenia
The evening’s message is grounded in hope, emphasizing that recovery from serious mental illness is not only possible, but probable for many individuals with the proper support and treatment.
This event is free and open to the public. Community members, families, educators, caregivers, and anyone interested in mental health advocacy are encouraged to attend.
