Food Pantry Stocks $1,000 in Donations From Tiverton Police Department [VIDEO]

The need from local families using the East Bay Community Action Program's food pantry is increasing during the holiday season.

Fresh and non-perishable food filled the pantry inside the (EBCAP) in Tiverton on Tuesday morning, thanks to a donation from the and Stop & Shop.

Sgt. James Costa said they gave $1,000 worth of food, in cooperation with Stop & Shop, to the program. He said the annual donation comes from the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Union Local 406, and this year they had a little extra to dole out for Thanksgiving in addition to their Christmas donation.

"We take donations all the time," he said. "Thanks to the support of businesses and residents in town, we were able to make additional donations."

Angela Downing, director of social services at Tiverton's facility, said they receive annual donations from the police and departments to fill the food pantry. Tuesday's donation brought in dozens of eggs, canned ham, canned chicken, apples, bananas, coffee, potato buds, muffin mix, tea and more.

Downing and volunteer Sherrill Estes immediately took the boxed donations and unloaded them in EBCAP's food pantry, with shelf and floor space quickly filling up. Downing said, at this point, they need peanut butter.
