5. Ocean State Job Lot in Fall River
Start a garden! If you have (or want to start) a flower or vegetable garden, now is the time to get some of those plants started inside. What could be better for a family during school vacation than playing in the dirt? Plants that have a longer growing season should be started indoors and then transplanted into your garden after the danger of frost has passed, which is around the end of April here in Rhode Island. I would suggest cucumbers, lettuce, peppers and tomatoes. You can also start broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage now, but these are harder to grow outside as they are a favorite treat for the moths. No supplies? They have everything you need at Job Lot, yes, Job Lot. I know, not what you expected but you can't beat the price and the kids can help you pick the seeds. If you want to buy the seed starting flats, they have them already filled with the seed starting mix. Want greener than plastic? Purchase the peat pots. Even greener still? Old plastic egg cartons (Eggland’s Best, or my favorite Sakonnet Farm’s) are perfect because you can use the lid to keep in moisture, or you can make your own pots using newspaper. It's very simple and a great project for the kids. Watch this youtube video for directions. The seeds need to be moist to germinate, so I cover my trays with plastic wrap until they have sprouted. They also need to be warm, between 65 to 75 degrees, bottom heat being the best. Some suggest putting them on top of the fridge. After they have sprouted, take off the plastic and move them to some place sunny. I have had good luck using my east windows and moving them around a bit to keep them in the sun. Don't forget to label your trays. There is nothing more exciting at this time of year than to see your seeds sprouting. Happy gardening!
(Author’s note: Sakonnet Farm is my favorite because I own it with my husband and kids!)
