Frugal Family: Family Day, an Antique Show and Fourth of July Food Deals

Also this week: an adult summer reading program and a new feature.

Looking for the best local deals for your family? Here's a few leads.

1. Annual Family Day: This event, slated for this Saturday, July 2, from noon to 4 p.m. has lots of family-friendly appeal. Not only is it free to get in, but there will also be free refreshments, free entertainment, free children's games and activities and free tours.

2. Four Corners Annual Antique Show: This annual Fourth of July Weekend tradition is FREE to children 12 and under. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, July 2, at Tiverton Four Corners. Adults are $7.

3. Summer Reading: My kids always join the summer reading program at the Brownell Library, but did you know that the Tiverton library also has a summer reading program for adults?

While your kids have their noses stuck in a book, take advantage of this opportunity to catch up on summer reading yourself. Sign up at the or and read or listen to books of your choice (must be 250+) pages. Starting July 1, submit a book review form and receive a raffle ticket to deposit into the “Novel Destination” entry box. Each Friday afternoon, a weekly drawing will be held for a gift basket related to India, Spain, Thailand, Massachusetts, and South America. First drawing will be held July 8. Entry must be in by 4:30 p.m. each Friday afternoon to be eligible. All registered participants will be eligible for the grand prize drawing held August 12. Last day for all entries is August 10.

4. Stock Up For Fourth of July: Take advantage of pre-Fourth deals at Stop & Shop right now, where hot dog and hamburger buns are 99 cents per pack through June 30. Lays Potato chips are also buy one, get one free at S&S and at Shaw's.

5. Local Area of Interest: Don't forget this fun place to take the kids. Revolutionary War redoubt was the troop staging area for the invasion of Aquidneck Island and Newport and the eventual Battle of Rhode Island. There is an observation tower and three miles of nature walks, great for viewing wild plants. Trail guides are available at Town Hall, across the street.
