Fun (And Mostly Free) School Vacation Activities

Keep your kids busy during vacation week with a variety of fun and many FREE events! Don't forget to check out your local library for additional discounts on these and other locations! Since it's vacation week, I added a few extra fun ideas.

Here are some Easter, art, Earth day and science fun to keep your kids busy during vacation week. There are week long activities in Newport and at local zoos. You can also enjoy a free children’s theatre in Four Corners. Many events listed are free or inexpensive.

  • SECRET WORLD OF BUBBLES
    Where/When: Knights of Columbus Hall, 28 Fish Road, Tiverton, April 19, 10:30 a.m.
    Why Go: Keith Michael Johnson is an artist, entertainer, scientist, researcher and teacher, featured on the Discovery Channel and USA Today. See also other Library activities this month.
    Price: FREE (no need to register just show up) For questions call Essex Library at 401-625-6796, ext. 14
  • SPRING INTO ART IN NEWPORT
    Where/When: Places and times vary. See schedule for details. Events run from April 16 to April 23
    Why Go: A week of fun for both adults and kids.
    Price: Prices vary. Many are free.
  • PARTY FOR THE PLANET
    Where/When: Roger Williams Park Zoo 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI, April 17 to April 22
    Why Go: Variety of fun activities that week; also an opportunity to visit Easter Bunny.
    Price: Most activities are free with admission adults$12, Children age 3-12 $6, seniors $8. Visit with Easter Bunny has additional cost. See website for details. 
  • MAGIC OF SCIENCE
    Where/When: Swansea Mall 262 Swansea Mall Drive, Swansea, MA Center Court near Macy's ; April 21, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
    Why Go: A fun show that explains the scientific process, from the art of experimenting to the creation of an invention.
    Price: FREE
  • EARTH DAY FAMILY FUN FRIDAY
    Where/When: Blithewold 101 Ferry Rd, Bristol, RI; April 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Why Go: A special performance will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by birthday cake, a craft activity, a community mural painting and fun! Leo’s Ristaurante will be selling slices of pizza, and as always, picnics, chairs & picnic blankets are welcome!
    Price:  Adult $10, Seniors $8 College students $8, Children ages 6-17 $2
  • 12TH ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT AND FUN DAY
    Where/When: Brown House Linden Lane, off Rt. 138 (East Main Rd) Glen Farm - Portsmouth, RI; April 23, 12:15 p.m. pony rides, 1 p.m. sharp egg hunt, toddler egg hunt 1:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m. story telling
    Why Go: Bring your own basket or bag to collect the eggs, and your camera, because the Easter Bunny will be there!
    Price: Free, donations encouraged 
  • CHILDREN’S THEATRE AT FOUR CORNERS
    Where/When: Tiverton Four Corners Art Center, 3852 Main Road, Tiverton Four Corners, RI April 23, 2 p.m.
    Why Go: Hampstead Stage Company performs their rendition of the story Aladdin
    Price: Children FREE, Adults $5
  • FUN AT THE ZOO
    Where/When: Buttonwood Zoo 425 Hawthorne St, New Bedford, MA; times and days vary
    Why Go: April 23 Enjoy Breakfast or cookies the Easter Bunny and/or enjoy fun activities all week, April 19 through April 22 at the zoo.
    Price: Breakfast: Members: $13/person; Non-members: $16/person; Children under 1 - free. The activities from April 19 through April 22 are free with admission: Adults are $6. Seniors and teens are $4.50, and children ages 3-12 are $3.00. Children under 3 are free. Parking is free.
