Girls' Teams Still On a Roll at Tiverton; Boys' Squads Notch First Wins

The Tigers' softball and girls' lacrosse teams both won twice last week, while their boys' lacrosse and boys' tennis combines both collected their first wins of the season.

BASEBALL

Two days after of the season, the Tigers were thrashed by North Kingstown, 18-2, in a Division I outing. Tiverton is now 1-6 in Division I-South outings.

Tiverton rallied from behind twice, using two home runs and four runs batted in from Jessica Drolet to forge an exciting 8-7 victory at Prout of Wakefield and moved into sole possession of first place in the Division II-East standings. The Tigers trailed by a 3-0 margin after one inning and a 7-5 tally after five chapters before pushing across two runs in the sixth chapter and one more in the seventh stanza. Winning pitcher Jen Burton whiffed nine batters.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers handed host Tolman of Pawtucket its first divisional loss of the season by posting a 9-6 decision. Tiverton erased a three-run lead after one inning, blew a three-run advantage in the fifth frame, then pushed across three decisive scores in the sixth stanza to earn the victory. Winning pitcher Drolet worked the distance, yielding six hits and whiffing three batters.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The Tigers cracked the win column for the first time this season when Ken Welchman’s overtime goal produced a 3-2 road victory over Scituate. Ben Sanford and Jake Albernaz had scored first-half goals to give Tiverton a 2-0 lead at the break, but the Spartans roared back to tie the contest in the second half, setting the stage for Welchman’s heroics. Evan McGreavey made 10 saves in net for the Tigers.

Earlier in the week, Tiverton bowed to Smithfield, 9-4, despite two goals from Welchman and single tallies by David Johnston and Sanford. Sanford also recorded two assists for the Tigers and keeper McGreavey kicked out 13 Sentinel shots on goal.

Last week, the Tigers bowed to East Providence, 12-4.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Tigers improved to 4-0 in Division II-South action by nipping host Warwick Vets, 6-5. Megan Raposa completed a “hat trick” with her third goal of the contest with less than two minutes to play and Alex Azevedo rejected five shots in goal to earn the win. Jackie Carmichael, Olivia Bergandy and Maya Bergandy also netted goals for Tiverton and Raposa was credited with two assists.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers had bopped Pilgrim High, 13-4, in a Division II-South match in Warwick. Samantha Welchman poured in five goals to pace Tiverton, while Raposa finished with four goals, Kara Lotz chipped in with a pair of scores, and Kate Karzenski and Alex Corr both added one goal. Netminder Azevedo rejected eight shots to preserve the win.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Tiverton scored its first victory of the season, handing previously undefeated West Warwick a convincing 6-1 defeat. Jordan Darkow (6-3, 6-3), Dan Tierney (6-0, 6-2) and Jordan Hancock (6-4, 6-0) won in singles’ matches for the Tigers while their doubles units of Tom O’Hara-Andy Sampaio (6-4, 6-3), Matt Correia-Willie Blake (6-7, 6-2, 10-3) and Rob Walsh-Alex Rosa (6-0, 6-0) swept their contests. Tiverton is now 1-2.

GOLF

The Tigers were idle last week during the vacation period and will return to action Monday (April 25) against East Providence and Mt. Hope Regional at the Swansea (Mass.) Country Club. Tiverton will also face St. Mary Academy/Bay View of East Providence and Rogers of Newport on Wednesday at the Newport Country Club.
