Lightning Determined Cause of Large Fire at Westport Scrap Metal Yard
Fire departments from Tiverton, Little Compton and surrounding southeastern Massachusetts towns aided in putting it out.
and fire departments spent all morning putting out a large fire at a Westport scrap metal yard. According to Tiverton Firefighter Josh Ferreira, investigators probed the cause of the heavy fire to a lightning strike. No injuries were reported.
Ferreira said that at approximately 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, there was a call of an unknown fire at Mid City Steel, located at 546 State Road, Westport, MA. Upon arrival he said they found heavy fire coming from a 40-foot pile of scrap metal. Mutual aid was called from Tiverton, Little Compton, Fall River, Dartmouth, New Bedford and Berkley, MA.
Ferreira said the fire was brought under control by 10 a.m., and three cranes from Mid City Steel worked all morning to pull apart the pile.
