Students Honored by Tiverton Lions Club in Peace Poster Contest
One eighth grade Tiverton Middle School student placed second in the state.
The Tiverton Lions Club presented this year's Peace Poster Contest winners at an award's dinner at McGovern's Restaurant last week. The contest included cash prizes, custom T-shirts with a picture of their poster on the shirt and a special certificate.

This year's first place winner is Aurora Goodland, an eighth grade student. Her poster was entered into this years Rhode Island District 42 competition and was chosen as the second place winner. Goodland received a cash prize and a special certificate from Rhode Island District Governor Francine Murphy-Brillon. Second place was won by Ariana Byrnes, a sixth grade student won second place and Nichole Miranda Choplin, a sixth grade student, took third place.

According to the contest's website, every year more than 300,000 students ages 11 to 13 from all around the world participate in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest and the top 24 posters are given awards ranging from $500 to $5,000. for the first place winner at the International level.
Valcourt said this year's theme was "Children Know Peace" and the winners were selected based on how well their poster depicted the theme, artistic quality and originality.

"It can be done in any medium," he said.
All work had to be done by the student alone. The top winner is honored at the United Nations headquarters in New York City in March. The first place winner at the state level this year was from East Providence.
