Man Tosses Heroin, Methadone From Car During Tiverton Police Stop

charged a local man with heroin possession last week after he reportedly threw contraband out of his vehicle during a routine stop.

Claywell M. Chafton, 23, of 16 Chace Ave., Tiverton, was arrested at 8:15 p.m., Monday, April 16. He was charged with one count of possession of heroin, one count of possession of methadone and operating a motor vehicle while in possession of controlled substances.

Chief Thomas Blakey said police pulled over a driver, Claywell, for a registration sticker violation. Blakey said the officer noted Claywell allegedly threw something out of the car while being stopped. The officer also reportedly observed restricted pupils and fresh track marks on Claywell's arm.

Blakey added the officer found a clear fluid, methadone, a hypodermic needle and a brown substance on the ground outside Claywell's vehicle, identified as heroin.
