Newport Police Make 72 St. Patrick's Day Arrests, Citations

The following information was provided by the Newport Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

According to , 72 people were either arrested or cited on St. Patrick's Day. There were 12 lock-ups and one person was held overnight, officials said.

Little Compton man denied fist bump, arrested instead

Alexander T. Hartnett, 24, of 56 Crandall Rd., Little Compton, was arrested around 1:42 p.m. Saturday, March 17, on a simple assault/battery charge.

Police had cleared out a large house party of approximately 300 people in the apartment above Via Via.

While they were clearing the sidewalk, Hartnett asked an officer for a fist bump. When the officer ignored him, Hartnett reportedly hit his shoulder and again asked for a fist bump.

The officer arrested him, to which Hartnett allegedly responded, “Yep, that was dumb. Please don’t arrest me.”

Fighting Charges

Jillian L. Cayer, 19, of 690 Brayton Rd., Tiverton, and Samantha M. Romano, 21, of 86 Lepes Rd., Tiverton, were arrested around 1:39 p.m. for fighting charges. Police saw the two women fighting in front of Banana Republic, reportedly punching and kicking one another.

In 2011, mostly for alcohol-related charges. 

As of Sunday afternoon, police reports were still being processed and some are still not complete.
