A Tiverton man was found dead in his home at 210 North Christopher Road by local and state authorities today after an approximate three-hour standoff. A press conference was held at the following the incident.
Chief Thomas Blakey said that Allan Angell, 63, of 210 North Christopher Road, Tiverton, was found deceased in his home shortly after 1 p.m. today with a single gunshot wound to the head.
"We believe it was self-inflicted," he said.

Blakey said police were called to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. Thursday morning after a family member made a phone call and said a man displaying a gun was going to harm himself.
Rhode Island State Police Capt. Darren Delaney said they were called for assistance and were the ones who entered the home with Tiverton Police. He said they recovered a small, .22-caliber handgun. Blakey said Tiverton Police made several attempts to reach Angell through phone calls before calling for assistance.

"We deployed our SWAT team, as well as our hostage negotiation team," said Delaney. "We tried to access communications via cell phone. He did not answer. At that point, our squad leader went on the front lawn with a loud P.A. system and called for him several times. There was no response. At that point, we deployed our SWAT team into the dwelling and did a room to room search and at that point he was located upstairs in the bedroom."
Blakey and Delaney said no shots were heard and Angell was alone in the house the whole time. No one else was harmed. Blakey said Angell has a wife and child, and has had a small history with the police department of a recent misdemeanor arrest and a driving while intoxicated arrest.
Tiverton Police and State Police will continue a joint investigation.
Police officers blocked the intersection of North Christopher Road and Lyne Road, a neighborhood next to Tiverton High School, for much of the morning. According to the police dispatch that sent officers to the scene, a man with weapons had barricaded himself inside the home.
According to neighbor Heather Carpentier, officers showed up at about 9:30 a.m. and immediately blocked a truck that was in a garage a few houses down. "It looked like someone was crouched between the truck. The cops crouched behind their cars," Carpentier said. She saw five or six marked Tiverton police cruisers, plus several more unmarked cars. Currently, there are five state police vehicles on scene.
Carpentier was watching from a window inside her father's home at 149 North Christopher Road, across the street.
