Spring Struggles Continue for Tiger Sports Teams

The spring 2011 season remains a trying one for most Tiverton High sports squads, although the girls' lacrosse team remained undefeated last week and the softball combine split two outings.

With the exception of girls’ lacrosse and softball, spring sports teams at continued to struggle last week as the season reached its midway point.

The Tigers remained undefeated in girls’ lacrosse and still in the thick of title contention in softball, but lost two of three baseball outings, a tennis match and four golf contests.

BASEBALL (4-8)

Visiting East Greenwich High School did all its scoring in the first three innings and went on to tame Tiverton, 12-2, in a Division I contest. The Tigers seriously hurt their cause by committing seven errors.

Earlier, Tiverton trailed from the start of the contest until the bottom of the sixth inning when it erupted for five runs and rallied past visiting Mt. St. Charles Academy of Woonsocket, 12-10, in a Division I crossover game. John Hartnett was the winning pitcher.

Also, the Tigers surrendered seven runs in the first two innings and never recovered, bowing to St. Raphael Academy, 14-4, in Pawtucket.

SOFTBALL (6-3)

Tiverton drilled South Kingstown High School, 11-1, in a Division II crossover contest as winning pitcher Jessica Drolet fanned 5 batters and helped her cause with a run-scoring triple. The Tigers settled the issue early by scoring all their runs in the first three frames. Freshman Sarah Barboza had the big blow for the winners, a bases-loaded triple in the first inning.

Earlier, the Tigers were swamped at home, 15-1, by unbeaten Middletown High School in a Division II-South contest. The Islanders broke open a competitive contest in the fourth inning with a 10-run explosion. Tiverton managed just 4 hits – one apiece by Sarah Whiston, Jessica Drolet, Jen Burton and Emily Masse – and committed five errors.

BOYS’ LACROSSE (1-6)

In their lone outing of the week, the Tigers by Warwick Vets High School, 6-5, in a Division III clash.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE (7-0)

Olivia Bergandy drilled 3 goals and handed out an assist as Tiverton held off host Middletown, 9-8, in a Division II-South outing. Kara Lotz and Samantha Welchman both netted 2 goals for the Tigers, while Megan Raposa and Jackie Carmichael added 1 goal apiece. Keeper Alex Azevedo rejected 9 shots for Tiverton, which out-shot the Islanders by a whopping 39-17 margin.

Earlier, the Tigers blitzed host Westerly High School, 16-7, in a Division II-South clash by scoring eight goals in each half. Raposa led the Tiverton surge with 4 goals, while Lotz, Welchman and Olivia Bergandy netted 3 goals apiece. Maya Bergandy added 2 goals for the winners, Katherine Karzenski had a solo tally, and keeper Azevedo turned aside 5 shots.

BOYS’ TENNIS (3-3)

The Tigers were handed a 6-1 Division III-South loss by Middletown. No. 2 singles’ player Dan Tierney (7-5, 6-2) produced the lone point for Tiverton.

GOLF (0-7)

Tiverton was bested by powerhouse Barrington High School (157-221) and Middletown (196-221) in a three-team competition staged at the Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth.

Earlier, the Tigers bowed to Portsmouth High School (156-247) and St. Mary/Bay View Academy of East Providence (186-247) in a three-team meet held at the Wannamoisett Country Club in East Providence. Kacy Fernandes (52) and Lucas Munafo (58) both broke 60 for Tiverton.
