Summer Reading Program at The Union Public Library

The Union Library will be running a new reading program starting June 30th.

The Union Public Library is proud to announce their new summer reading program, beginning soon on Tuesday June 30th. Slots are still available for children aged 5-8 for their Superheroes from Around the World story times and crafts, running every Tuesday from 1:30-3:00PM for six weeks until the first Tuesday in August. The program will be run by BCC student Mollie Cholette and librarian Dianna Parente, as they explore six weeks of content exposing small-town children to the cultures from a bigger world. Weeks will include an introduction to superheroes, a week of Mexican culture, a week of African culture, a week of African-American culture, a week of Native American vulture, and a conclusion in which all the themes will be revisited to cement the learning. The program intends to explore ideas like “what makes a superhero to us?” in contrast to “what makes a superhero to someone else?” and emphasize the wonderful and varied cultures found around the world. Reading and writing topics such as adjectives will also be introduced or recovered, depending on the individual student’s availability. Additional materials will be made available to families, including a syllabus and suggested further reading list for families who want to explore certain themes further.

This program is a new addition to the library, as Union has not had an independent children’s program of its own in recent memory. This is an exciting expedition into new territory for the library and they are quite eager to expand their contributions to the community. This program was originally designed as Mollie’s senior project for the local Tiverton High School as a small part of the Essex program we all know and love, but the idea was so well-received that Union decided it would start their own program in conjunction with the regularly scheduled Essex summer reading. The Union library has been spoken of in the news fairly recently, as people called for the historic library to close. Union is indeed an important part of the library system, as this program proves. Rather than closing down, Union intends remain an integral part of both the library system and the community. As the treasurer for the Union library, Geny Dauphin, said, “this library is a vital part of Tiverton history, and will remain a vital part of Tiverton’s present and future.”
