The Barrington High School girls' volleyball team wasted listed time Wednesday night while disposing of Tiverton High School, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-9) in the Division II-South season opener for both squads.
Quick and efficient.
The Barrington High Schol girls’ volleyball team needed just a little more than one hour Wednesday night to dispose of host , 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-9), in the Division II-South season-opening match for both squads.
Senior Holly Gildea terrorized the Tigers at the net with 10 kills, 3 blocks and 3 assists and senior Briana Stegall dished out 11 assists while also serving 5 aces as the Eagles rarely trailed in the contest, much to the delight of Coach Ron Enos.

“We had good results, we played well and we took advantage of some free ball opportunities to get our offense going,” Enos said. “Our passing was crisp and we have a lot of experience on this team, so it was what we expected going in.”
Although Tiverton hung tough with Barrington through the first two sets, the hosts performed erratically and were guilty of numerous unforced errors, much to the consternation of Coach Kerri Russo.

“I think we had first-game jitters tonight and it was a roller-coaster ride for us,” Russo said. “We got high, then we got low, and we were never able to get ourselves out of holes.”
In all three sets, the Eagles exhibited superior quickness, speed, skill and cohesion, thwarting numerous Tiger rallies with clutch plays, solid hitting and passing and poise under pressure. In contrast, while Tiverton received solid efforts from Jessica Drolet and Abby Johanning (unofficially, both notched 4 kills), its players too frequently failed to make routine plays, short-circuiting its comeback efforts.
In the opening set, Barrington zoomed to a 7-1 lead, until Tiverton ran off five unanswered points to close to within 7-6. Later the Eagles built a 13-7 bulge before the Tigers rebounded to within 15-13, and after Barrington widened the gap to 19-13, Tiverton responded with a 5-0 run to again draw to within a single point at 19-18.
The Eagles, however, regrouped behind kills from Gildea, Lexi Drucker (4 kills and 4 digs) and Stegall to finish the game on a 6-3 spurt.
Tiverton took leads of 1-0, 4-1 and 5-3 in the second set until tallying four straight points on Gildea’s serve for an 8-5 edge. The Tigers three times clawed back to within one point (8-7, 12-11 and 15-14) before three kills by Gildea, two by Katie Butterfield (4 kills and 1 block) and one from Drucker fueled a game-ending 10-2 burst.
The Eagles snapped a 2-2 deadlock in the third set with four service points by Nadia Rudman (1 kill, 3 assists and 7 digs) and never looked back. Tiverton trailed by a 13-8 gap when Barrington iced the outcome with a 10-0 blitz highlighted by five kills and a block by Gildea and concluded the match on a Stegall kill.
Abbie DeRiso (8 digs), Julia Aspeland (1 assist), Carolyn Fales, Marie Correia, Megan Duffy, Avery Trim and Magda Steringer (1 kill) also performed solidly for the Eagles, while April Bento, Jackie Carmichael, Emily Costa, Ashley Destremps, Taylor Fernandes, Kristie Devine, April Bento and Victoria Martin all played well for the Tigers.
Both squads will resume their Division II-South schedules next week. Tiverton returns to action Monday at home against Mount Hope High School of Bristol, while Barrington will host Rogers High School of Newport on Tuesday.
