Tiverton Tigers Continue to Roar in Fall Sports

Tiverton High School's fall sports teams continued to prosper last week as the season moved into October.

football, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball teams were all successful last week as the fall sports season entered its second month.

FOOTBALL

The Tigers executed two trick plays to perfection and defeated Classical High School of Providence, 12-3, at home in a Div. III battle. After the Purple took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, Tiverton responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Taylor Ekstrom to running back B.K. Kiser to take a 6-3 edge at halftime. In the third quarter, the Ekstrom-to-Kiser connection worked again for 45 yards and a touchdown as Tiverton improved to 2-1 against divisional rivals and 3-1 overall this season. The Tigers’ defense has now allowed just one touchdown during the past nine quarters.

BOYS’ SOCCER

In a wild Div. II outing, Tiverton battled Classical to a 3-3 draw in which all six goals were scored in the second half. The Tigers rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 late, but the Purple salvaged a draw with a late tally. Zachary Blais, Andrew Bonoan and Jameson Hughes all netted goals for Tiverton, while Blais, Andrew Kinnane and Corey Newbury earned assists and keeper Matt Ramos amassed 8 saves.

Earlier, Tiverton rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final 10 minutes to forge a 3-3 Div. II deadlock with host Burrillville High School. Bonoan, Newbury and Alex Farias all netted goals for the Tigers and keeper Ramos registered 13 saves.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Lincoln High School snapped a scoreless duel at halftime with a pair of second-half goals and hung on to nip Tiverton, 2-1, in a Div. II start. Tori Fryzel produced a penalty-shot score for the Tigers with two minutes to play to avert a shutout and keeper Haley Higginbottom stopped 7 shots.

“We played pretty well for about the first 65 minutes of the match, but we had a little lapse in the second half when Lincoln scored its goals,” said Tiverton Coach Joe Gill.

Earlier, Tiverton blanked Woonsocket High School, 5-0, in a Div. II outing thanks to 2 goals by Erica Farias and single scores from Erin Rodrigues, Tori Fryzel and Avery Pacheco. Farias, Jackie Wilson and Eileen Kinnane were credited with assists and keeper Liz Janick registered a shutout with 3 saves for the Tigers, who enjoyed a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

“We were pretty much in control throughout,” said Gill. “We played well on both ends of the field and Liz Janick, subbing for an injured Haley Higginbottom, did a great job in goal.”

Also earlier, Tiverton suffered its first loss of the season in a 1-0 setback at the hands of North Smithfield High School in a Div. II match. The Northmen snapped a scoreless duel with a goal with 12 minutes to play and hung on for the win.

“It was a well-played game by both teams,” said Gill. “We had an opportunity in the second half, but missed a penalty kick.”

Tiverton keeper Higginbottom recorded 11 saves, while Gill praised Maya Bergandy and Farias for “outstanding overall games.”

GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY

Tiverton’s Rachel Pimental and Sarah Whiston were named to the South team which competed Saturday night in Cranston in the North-South All-Star match to benefit the Alice Sullivan Foundation.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Tiverton handed Exeter-West Greenwich Regional High School its first loss of the season, a 4-3 defeat in Div. III action. The Tigers captured three singles’ contest and one critical doubles’ tilt to pull off an upset win.

No. 1 Mariah Korn (6-2, 6-4), No. 2 Hannah Glowacki (6-3, 6-0) and No. 4 Samantha Rollings (7-6, 6-2) all produced singles’ victories as did Tiverton’s No. 1 doubles’ unit of Courtney Toler-Tori Davis (7-6, 6-4).

Earlier, the Tigers were defeated by Warwick Vets High School, 5-2, in a Div. III encounter. Tiverton’s No. 1 Korn (6-1, 6-0) and No. 4 Rollings (6-2, 6-1) both captured singles’ matches.

Korn defeated Julie Keedy of Ponaganset Regional High School, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the Div. III Singles Qualifier. In the first round, Keedy had bested McGrady, 8-0. Also in the first round, Rollings lost to Rochelli Megla of Tolman High School of Pawtucket, 8-1.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Tiverton handily disposed of Middletown High School, 3-0 (25-15, 25-3, 25-14) in a Division II-South encounter.

Earlier, the Tigers were clawed by Exeter-West Greenwich Regional High School, 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-11) in a Div. II-South contest. Jessica Drolet was a bright spot for Tiverton with 4 kills and 2 blocks.
