Tigers Stay Tough in Lacrosse and Softball
Tiverton High's girls' lacrosse and softball teams collectively won all five of their contests last week, while the other four Tiger squads combined for just one victory.
's girls’ lacrosse team remained perfect this season with three key victories last week, while its softball team won twice in convincing fashion to solidify its postseason prospects.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE (9-0)
Tiverton remained unbeaten, rallying from a three-goal deficit in the first half to nip Westerly High, 6-5, in a Division II clash.

The Tigers clawed Pilgrim High of Warwick, 19-7, in a Division II encounter thanks to 8 goals from Samantha Welchman, 6 goals by Kara Lotz and 2 goals from Alex Corr. Jackie Carmichael, Emily Costa and Jackie Wilson also scored for Tiverton and Carmichael and Maya Bergandy were credited with assists. Tiger keeper Alex Azevedo racked up 7 saves.
Earlier, the Tigers amassed 11 first-half goals en route to doubling up Narragansett High, 18-9, in a Division II encounter. Megan Raposa collected 6 goals and 1 assist for Tiverton, while Welchman pumped in 5 goals, Katherine Karzenski recorded 3 goals, Olivia Bergandy totaled 2 goals and Lotz added a solo score. Lotz, Olivia Bergandy and Maya Bergandy also notched assists for the winners and goalkeeper Azevedo blocked 17 shots.

SOFTBALL (8-3)
Tiverton went on an offensive binge, raking visiting St. Raphael’s Academy of Pawtucket for 25 hits and scoring all its runs in the first four innings en route to a 29-1 dismantling of the Saints in a Division II game. Sarah Whiston clubbed 5 hits – including three home runs – and drove in 10 runs to pace the Tigers, while teammate Maggie Masse also cracked 5 hits, Emily Masse finished with 3 hits (including a three-run triple) and Rachel Pimental added 2 hits.
Jessica Drolet pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters to pace the Tigers to an 8-0 win over host Rogers High of Newport in a Division II battle. Drolet helped her cause offensively with a run-scoring triple. Sarah Barboza spearheaded Tiverton’s attack with 3 hits and Jenny Burton contributed 2 safeties.
BASEBALL (4-11)
John Croft pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 batters to lead Coventry High to a 15-0 whitewashing of the Tigers in a Division I outing.
Earlier, Tiverton bowed to visiting Chariho Regional, 8-4, in a Division I contest. The Chargers broke open a tight battle with a five-run explosion in the top of the fourth inning.
BOYS’ LACROSSE (1-8)
Smithfield High trimmed Tiverton, 14-1, in a Division III match.
Host East Providence High broke away from a halftime deadlock and went on to pin the Tigers, 7-4, in a Division III match. Ben Sanford collected 2 goals for Tiverton, one more than teammates David Johnston and Ken Welchman, and keeper Corey Mack amassed 7 saves.
BOYS’ TENNIS (4-5)
In a non-league contest, Tiverton bowed to Somerset High School, 5-2, when the visiting Raiders swept the three doubles’ matches. Jordan Darkow (6-0, 6-1) and Jordan Hancock (7-6, 6-2) produced singles’ victories for the Tigers.
Earlier, the Tigers bowed to undefeated Exeter-West Greenwich, 5-2, in a Division III outing. Tiverton triumphed in singles’ with Alessio Ayuninjam (3-6, 6-0, 6-1) and in doubles’ with Rebecca Mauricio-Alex Rosa (6-1, 6-1).
They had a over Coventry.
GOLF (0-9)
Tiverton dropped its eighth and ninth matches of the season, bowing to Mt. Hope Regional (192-222) and Middletown High (200-222) at the Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club in Middletown. Lucas Munafo was low scorer for the Tigers at 53, followed by Trevor Criollos (55), Matt Bessette (56) and Mike Pacheco (58).
Earlier, the Tigers bowed to undefeated Barrington High, 150-223, at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington. Kacy Fernandes paced Tiverton with a 57, followed by Nick Barboza (58), Munafo (58) and Bessette (60).
