Tiverton Man Receives 8 Felony Charges

The following arrest was supplied by the Tiverton Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Tiverton man received a host of third-offense felony charges last week from based on two separate incidents of assault, larceny, vandalism and repeated restraining order violations.

Jason M. Torres, 28, of 7 Hooper St., Tiverton, was arrested at 9:58 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. He's been charged with two counts of domestic simple assault and battery (third offense), two counts of violating a no-contact order (third offense), domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone (third offense), domestic larceny under $500 (third offense), domestic disorderly conduct (third offense) and domestic vandalism (third offense). Police also took Torres into custody based on an affidavit and arrest warrant dating back to July.

Lt. Patrick Jones said police received a call last Wednesday night for a report of domestic violence at an Arbor Terrace residence. When they arrived the following morning, police encountered a woman, later identified as the wife of Torres, sitting on the stairwell. Jones said she was yelling, alleging Torres was trying to flee out of a window. The responding officer went up to the second floor and took Torres into custody.

He said there was a no-contact order out from the wife against Torres.

The July incident occurred between Torres and the 48-year-old father-in-law at approximately 4:19 a.m. on July 16, Jones added, where four of the nine listed charges stem from. The 911 caller from that incident reported a restraining order violation.

Jones said the father-in-law alleged Torres was over at the Hooper Street residence at that hour and knew there was a no-contact order issued against him, and the wife, his daughter, was living there at the time.

"The father-in-law sees Torres on the property and tells him to leave," Jones said, who noted that Torres allegedly told his wife's father he was there to "get some tools."

Jones said the father-in-law continued to tell Torres to leave, and Torres allegedly started yelling and swearing back, and then the father-in-law made a move to call 911. Torres allegedly grabbed the phone out of the father-in-law's hands and broke it, making it useless. Jones added that Torres allegedly pushed the man.
