Tiverton and Little Compton Car Enthusiasts Show Off Classic Wheels at Newport Motor Car Show

The Newport Motor Car Show was held this past weekend at Portsmouth Abbey.

The 53rd annual Newport Motor Car Show rolled onto the grounds of Portsmouth Abbey Sunday just in time for Father's Day.

The event, sponsored by the Portsmouth Rotary Club, saw more than 100 cars, foreign and domestic, produced between 1910 and 1980, all having been painstakingly and lovingly restored to their original, pristine conditions. There was an entry, a Red Willys Jeepster, that received restoration from in Tiverton, in Little Compton and in Portsmouth. There were other entries from Tiverton, Little Compton and nearby southeast Massachusetts.

Portsmouth Rotary Club member Paul Watters says they hope to raise about $7,000 from the event. Monies will go back into the community in the form of grants and scholarships for local schools.

"This is the oldest car show in New England," said Watters and, "has been a terrific event for the club."

Peter Schenck, president of the Portsmouth Rotary, says, "We are a smaller group than other clubs and we get a lot of work out of 15  great guys."
