Tiverton High Girls' Teams Shine in Early Season Outings
The Tigers are unbeaten in girls' lacrosse and once-beaten in softball, but are still seeking their first victories in baseball, boys' lacrosse and boys' tennis.
Despite rainy weather on a couple of days, 's spring sports teams continued their 2011 schedules last week. The Tigers’ two girls’ squads have combined for just one loss, while three boys’ contingents are still seeking their first triumphs of the season.
BASEBALL
The Tigers dipped to 0-5 in the Division I-South standings after losing to Chariho Regional (11-6), Coventry (10-2) and South Kingstown (11-1). In the loss to SK, Tiverton held a 1-0 lead after three innings before the host Rebels exploded to score all their runs in the next three frames, including seven times in the sixth chapter.

“We really battled South Kingstown,” said Tiger Coach Carl Reid. “The score doesn’t indicate how close the game really way. Our kids played their hearts out.”
Reid singled out Mike Perella, John Hartnett, Derrick Paquette and Jacob Kapstein for their performances to date, but stressed he is satisfied with the efforts of his entire squad.

“I’m very pleased with the attitudes and work ethic of these kids,” Reid said. “No one is discouraged and no one is giving up.”
After playing five straight road games while its home field dries after the winter thaw, Tiverton will make its home debut Tuesday at 11 a.m. against Middletown High in a Division I-South clash.
“It will be good to finally play a game at home,” Reid said.
SOFTBALL
After one day earlier, the Tigers bounced back Friday to blank Mt. Hope Regional, 9-0, and improve their Division II-East record to 3-1. Tiverton broke it open early with a six-run eruption in the second inning and winning pitcher Jen Burton tossed a complete-game five-hitter.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Tiverton (0-2) was idle this week until Saturday night when it hosted East Providence. The Tigers will hit the road twice this week, visiting Smithfield on Monday at 6 and Scituate on Wednesday at 3:45.
In its season debuts a week ago, Tiverton lost to Toll Gate of Warwick (12-5) and Warwick Vets (9-4).
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The Tigers got off to a 2-0 start this past week by taming Middletown (11-6) and Narragansett (15-7).
Samantha Welchman sparked the victory over Narragansett with five goals, while teammates Olivia Bergandy, Jackie Carmichael and Kara Lotz added two goals apiece. Alexandra Corr, Kate Karzenski, Jackie Wilson and Maya Bergandy all tallied once for the winners.
Alexandra Azevedo collected 13 saves in net to preserve Tiverton’s second win of the season.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Tiverton dropped its Division III-South openers last week, falling to Middletown (7-0) and Exeter-West Greenwich (5-2).
Against Middletown, Tiger Dan Tierney won one set at No. 2 singles as did the No. 3 doubles unit of Robert Walsh-Alex Rosa.
Opposite EWG, Jordan Hancock (6-1, 6-2) triumphed at No. 4 singles for Tiverton as did its No. 3 doubles tandem of Walsh-Rosa (6-0, 6-2).
GOLF
The Tigers will be idle until April 25 when they battle Mt. Hope Regional and East Providence at the Swansea (Mass.) Country Club.
