Tiverton High School Sports Have Success Across The Board

It was a week to remember at Tiverton High School as all six fall sports teams posted at least one victory.

It was a highly productive week for fall sports teams at . The Tigers triumphed at least once in all six sports and the girls’ soccer and girls’ tennis squads were especially impressive.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Host Smithfield High School snapped a 1-1 draw at halftime with a pair of second-half goals and defeated Tiverton, 3-1, in a Div. II match. Andrew Bonoan scored the Tigers’ lone goal and keeper Matt Ramos amassed 9 saves.

Earlier, the Tigers ran rampage in the second half over West Warwick High School, 5-0, in a Div. II outing. Bonoan topped Tiverton with 2 goals and teammates Andrew Kinnane, Corey Newbury and Jameson Hughes all added 1 goal. Kinnane also contributed 2 assists and Newbury 1 assist, while keepers Ramos (6) and Hayden Costa (2) combined for 8 saves for the Tigers, who enjoyed just a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Tiverton battled Westerly High School to a 0-0 Div. II stalemate despite controlling play for most of the second half.

“It was an even contest in the first half, but we pretty much dominated 30 of the 40 minutes of the second half,” said Tiger Coach Joe Gill. “We hit the goalpost three times in the second half.”

Gill lauded Tiverton’s defense and keeper Haley Higginbottom, which collected 9 saves.

Earlier, Tiverton posted a solid 3-1 Div. II road victory over Classical High School of Providence as Jackie Wilson booted 2 goals, Olivia Bergandy tallied 1 goal, and Rebecca Mauricio, Erica Farias and Tori Fryzel all contributed 1 assist. Higginbottom kicked out 13 shots in net for the Tigers, who pulled away from a 1-1 deadlock at intermission.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Gill. “We pretty much came out flat in the first half and made a couple of minor adjustments at halftime, moved a few people around, and dominated the second half.”

Gill praised Erin Rodrigues for her outstanding defensive play.

GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY

Smithfield High School zoomed to a three-goal lead by halftime and whitewashed Tiverton, 4-0, in a Div. II affair. Netminder Allison Raposa turned aside 7 shots for the Tigers.

Earlier, Tiverton cracked the win column for the first time this season with a 5-0 thrashing of Chariho Regional High School in a Div. II contest. Sarah Whiston and Kara Lotz both collected 2 goals for the Tigers, Hannah Cook-Dumas chipped in with 1 goal, and Katherine Karzenski and Colbi Alvarez both finished with 1 assist. Allison Raposa earned a shutout in net with 5 saves for Tiverton, which built a 4-0 cushion by halftime.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Tiverton swamped Hope High School of Providence, 7-0, in a Div. III-South encounter, losing no sets and merely 11 games in the process. The Tigers swept the singles’ matches behind No. 1 Mariah Korn (6-1, 6-0), No. 2 Hannah Glowacki (6-1, 6-0), No. 3 Chelsea Petit (6-0, 6-0) and No. 4 Samantha Rollings (6-0, 6-0) as well as the doubles’ competitions with No. 1 Courtney Toler-Allie Motta (6-1, 6-0), No.2 Meg McGrady-Zuara Amaral (6-2, 6-0) and No. 3 Eva Lavoie-Kelly Mello (6-2, 6-4).

Earlier, Tiverton bested Rogers High School, 5-2, in a Div. III-South showdown. The Tigers triumphed in singles’ matches with No. 1 Korn (6-2, 6-4), No. 2 Glowacki (6-4, 6-4) and No. 3 Petit (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) and in doubles’ contests behind No. 1 Tori Davis-Toler (6-2, 6-0) and No. 2 Motta-McGrady (6-4, 7-6).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

The Tigers ripped off their third straight Division II-South triumph by taming Our Lady of Fatima High School of Warren, 3-1 (25-13, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18).

The Tigers on Friday night 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.
