Tiverton Equestrian Dies From Injuries

The Tiverton teenager who died overnight at Rhode Island Hospital. Cayla Almy, 19, was a 2011 graduate of .

"We will continue to investigate, but it appears at this time that it was just a tragic accident," said Lt. Patrick Jones.

Lt. Jones said the initial call came in around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. A man walking his dog on North Christopher Avenue reportedly saw a horse gallop out of the woods. Lt. Jones said the man walked into the woods a few steps and found a young woman on the ground and unresponsive. The man went back and called 911.

Rescue personnel initially made arrangements for a medical flight to bring Almy to St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River. She was transported and then flown to Rhode Island Hospital, Lt. Jones said.

On Monday morning, Assistant Principal John McKinnon said grief counseling will be available for students and faculty this afternoon and all day Tuesday.

"She had a very infectious smile and just a great outlook on life," McKinnon said.

Almy was a four-year cheerleader, he added.

Jones said there is still no information regarding the condition of Almy's horse, but police are putting reports together.
