The state police offered tips on their Facebook page on how to best deal with the potholes that just can’t be avoided:
- Keep tires properly inflated. Tires with the correct amount of air hold up better against potholes than tires with too much or too little air.
- Avoid puddles. A shallow puddle could turn out to be a deep and sharp-edged pothole filled with water.
- Drive slowly when driving through a pothole-ridden area
- Do not brake heavily when driving directly over a pothole as it could cause more tire damage than usual.
- Do not swerve. Hitting a pothole at an odd angle can cause more damage to the tire, wheel, rim and alignment.
- Firmly hold the steering wheel when driving over a pothole to keep from losing control.
