Tiverton Police Log: Youths Caught Stealing Bikes, Drunk Driver Nearly Hits Officer

The following arrests were supplied by the Tiverton Police Department. They do not indicate a conviction.

charged three youths last week with stealing bikes from homes in the Robert Gray Avenue area. They were arrested at 10 p.m. on Colonial Avenue on Monday, Oct. 10.

A 12-year-old boy, from Tiverton, was charged with larceny over $500, larceny under $500 and conspiracy to commit larceny. A 14-year-old boy, from Tiverton, was charged with larceny under $500, receiving stolen goods and conspiracy to commit larceny. Another 14-year-old boy, also from Tiverton, was charged with larceny under $500 and conspiracy to commit larceny. The boys were taken into custody, turned over to their parents and referred to the Juvenile Hearing Board.

According to Lt. Patrick Jones, three bikes were stolen in total: One costing approximately $640 and the other two valued over $250, including various parts.

He said officers responded to a Robert Gray Avenue residence at 6:15 p.m. where a mother said two of her son's bicycles were stolen off the front yard. A missing bike was also reported in that area earlier in the day at about 9 a.m. Jones said one of the victims told police they saw two of the boys riding by on bikes who matched the description from the original complaint.

About an hour later, Jones said police were called to Horizon Drive for a report of two boys coming out of a wooded area on bikes. Officers went down and confronted the youths. Jones said all three bikes and their parts were recovered.

Alleged drunk driver nearly collides with officer

Mathias Camara, 58, of 23 William St., Tiverton, was arrested at 9:23 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, on Driftwood Drive, Tiverton. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense), refusal to submit a chemical test and presence of alcoholic beverages while operating a motor vehicle.

Jones said an officer was working an unrelated detail on the Seapowet Bridge that evening when he saw a vehicle driving toward him heading north. As the car approached, Jones said the officer noticed it was moving at a slow rate of speed and not stopping.

"When the vehicle nearly struck him, he had to hop over the wooden railing," Jones said.

The car reportedly almost struck the left side of the bridge barrier before swerving back and continuing north on Seapowet Avenue. Jones noted its tail lamps were also out. The officer took pursuit and stopped the vehicle.

"We made contact with Mr. Camara, who showed signs of alcohol intoxication," Jones said.

Camara reportedly failed a field sobriety test and was brought back to the station where he later refused to submit a chemical test. During an inventory of his car, Jones said police found two, almost empty cans of Budweiser and four empty nip bottles of black sambuca.

DUI

Robert R. Charest, 63, of 301 Bulgarmarsh Road, Apt. 44, Tiveton, was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17 on Bulgarmarsh Road. He was charged wiith operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense).

Lt. Jones said an officer on patrol on Fish Road came behind a red pick-up truck traveling south, and saw the vehicle weaving several times through the center lane and the fogline. He said the car was constantly breaking to 20 miles per hour, then speeding back up. At the intersection of Fish and Bulgarmarsh roads, Jones said the driver, later identified as Charest, rolled through the stop sign. After being pulled over, police determined he was under the influence. Back at the station, Charest refused to submit a chemical test.

Alleged assault

Tim J. Cabral, 33, of 473 Old Fall River Road, Apt. 16, Swansea, MA, was arrested at 4:51 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. He was charged with domestic simple assault and battery.

Lt. Jones said the arrest was based on an Oct. 10 incident where the victim, later identified as Cabral's girlfriend, reported to police she was in an argument with him, alleging he punched her in the right arm. Before police arrived, Cabral left their house on Lepes Road. Jones said the officer handling the case made contact with Cabral, who reportedly turned himself in the next day.

Violation of old restraining order

Jacqueline Buckley, 46, of 825 Bulgarmarsh Road, Tiverton, was arrested at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at her residence. She was charged with violation of a no contact order.

Lt. Jones said officers responded to the house for a report of an intoxicated woman alleging her husband was yelling at her. Upon arrival, the husband answered the door and let police in to speak with Buckley who is reportedly extremely intoxicated, sitting on the floor. Police told her she had a warrant out for her arrest on a previous allegation of a no contact order violation, which was still active at the time, but since the arrest, has been rescinded.

DUI on Rt. 24

Michael D. Baker, 31, of 93 Jiley Hill Road, Tiverton, was arrested at 9:48 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 on Rt. 24. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to submit a chemical test and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Lt. Jones said an officer watched Baker's vehicle swerving in its lane, crossing the fogline and crossing into other travel lanes. The car was stopped and Jones said the driver, later identified as Baker, could not complete the field sobriety test. He refused a chemical test back at the station.

Domestic assault

John W. O'Brien, Jr., 59, of 22 O Drive, Westport, MA, was arrested in Tiverton at 12:43 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. He was charged with domestic simple assault and battery and domestic vandalism.

Jones said a woman came to the police station lobby alleging she was pushed by her boyfriend, who also punched a hole in their apartment wall. Officers made contact with O'Brien, who reportedly surrendered himself.

Bench warrant

Tony J. Rodrigues, 32, of 247 Welcome St., Fall River, was arrested in Tiverton at 5:14 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. He was taken into custody on an oustanding bench warrant issued in Second District Court for failing to appear. Jones said he was pulled over for not wearing his safety belt. A registration check reportedly revealed the bench warrant.
