Tiverton Police: 2 DUIs, Domestic Vandalism and Violation of No Contact Order

DUI by minor with passengers, vodka

Courtney M. Tavares, 20, of 395 America St., Apt. 3, Fall River, MA, was arrested by at 2:10 a.m. May 27. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense), transportation of an alcoholic beverage by a minor, presence of alcoholic beverage while operating a motor vehicle, refusal to submit a chemical test, passing a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, operating below the minimum speed, lane roadway violations and failure to properly display plates.

An officer posted on Stafford Road reportedly saw a vehicle traveling 24 miles per hour around 1:25 a.m. that night, according to Lt. Patrick Jones. The officer observed the vehicle cross over the double yellow lines and the fog line. Jones said the officer stopped the vehicle in the area of 779 Stafford Road noting Tavares displayed signs of intoxication. There were other passengers in the car.

Jones said police found a half-full bottle of vodka on the floor behind the driver's seat. Tavares was asked to take a field sobriety test, which she failed. Jones said she was taken into custody, and reportedly refused a chemical test while back at the station.

DUI and speeding

Armand St. Laurent III, 44, of 70 Holly Circle, Tiverton, was arrested at 9 p.m. May 27. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense), refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test, refusal to submit to a chemical test, presence of alcoholic beverages while operating a motor vehicle, speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, passing a motor vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, lane roadway violations and illegal turn signal.

Jones said an officer on patrol on Route 24 noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. When exiting the highway at the Fish Road, the car continued to accelerate, the officer reported, up to 61 miles per hour, Jones said.

Upon stopping the car, the officer noted St. Laurent appeared to under the influence, according to reports. He allegedly failed field sobriety test. Jones said the officer allegedly found several open containers of Budweiser beer in the car. St. Laurent was arrested and brought back to the station, where he allegedly refused to submit to a chemical test.

Domestic vandalism

Doreen Travers, 50, of Tiverton, was arrested at 12:23 p.m. on May 24. She was charged with domestic vandalism. Jones said officers responded to a Florence Street home for a report of a landlord and tenant dispute. Officers lerarned it was a dispute over property ownership rights by a family. During the fight, Jones said Travers punched a window pane on the kitchen door, shattering it and injuring her hand. Based on that, she was charged.

Violation of no contact order

Joseph H. Fitzgerald, 41, of 33 Bluff Ave., Tiverton, was arrested at 3:58 p.m. on May 26. He was charged with violation of a no contact order. Jones said police were dispatched to the Bluff Avenue home for a report of a domestic dispute between a mother and her son. Police learned that the son, Fitzgerald, was on a domestic disorderly conduct charge. Upon arrival, officers found Fitzgerald present, which is reportedly in violation of the no contact order issued against him. He was taken into custody.

Bench warrants

  • Manuel Cardoso, 35, of 165 Blackstone, Fall River, MA, was arrested at 2:54 a.m. May 28. He was taken into custody based on an outstanding bench warrant issued in Third District Court. Jones said police stopped a car near on Stafford Road for a suspected DUI. The warrant for Cardoso, a reported passenger in the vehicle, was found during a computer check.
  • Matthew Almeida, 23, of 2 Romano Village Drive, Westport, MA, was arrested at 1:11 a.m. May 30. He was taken into custody based on an outstanding bench warrant issued in .
