Tiverton Police: DUI, Domestics, and Warrants

Portsmouth Man Arrested For Drunken-Driving
Ryan J. Kirtland, 25, of 22 Riverside St., Portsmouth, was arrested on Wednesday, July 4 at 1:41 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence, first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and resisting arrest.
According to reports, a Tiverton Police officer who was driving on Rt. 24 south saw Kirtland’s car traveling at a slow rate of speed and watched it swerve several times. After stopping him, the officer noted the smell of alcohol on Kirtland’s breath and asked him to complete a field sobriety test, which he failed. After officers placed Kirtland under arrest, he reportedly became belligerent, slipped his handcuffs from his back to his front side and lunged at an officer, allegedly attempting to head butt him. It took two officers to subdue Kirtland. He was arraigned in Second Division District Court later that day and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Tiverton Woman Charged with Two Counts Of Assault
Stacy L. Costa, 37, of 1 Mill St. Apt. 1401, Tiverton, was arrested on Wednesday, July 4 at 5:55 p.m. and charged with two counts of simple assault, and two counts of vandalism. Shortly before 5 p.m. police responded to the Bourne Mill Apartments for a report of a fight inside an apartment. According to reports, Costa had gone to retrieve some of her belongings from an ex-boyfriend’s home and allegedly got involved in a physical argument with him and his girlfriend. Police noted injuries on Costa’s ex-boyfriend’s mouth and neck and on the girlfriend’s foot. During the struggle, a vase, picture frame and wall were also allegedly damaged by Costa.

Warrants
- Jason A. Burgess, 29, of 197 Rodman St. Apt. 1C, Fall River, was arrested on Thursday, July 5 at 1:28 a.m. on a bench warrant out of Sixth Division District Court. Police found the warrant, which was for nonpayment of court fines, after a computer check after he was stopped for speeding on Rt. 24 north.
- Joseph S. Canto, 25, of 354 Ashley Boulevard Apt. 3, New Bedford, MA, was arrested on Saturday, July 7 at 10:10 p.m. on a bench warrant from Second Division District Court and charged with multiple motor vehicle infractions. Police stopped Canto on Rt. 24 north because his car was unregistered. Neither Canto nor his passenger was seat belted, and the car had no valid inspection sticker. After a subsequent computer check, police found Canto was wanted because he owed $4,185 to the courts. He was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston
Tiverton Man Arrested on Domestic Charges
Richard Tavares, 50, of 1223 Bulgarmarsh Road, Tiverton, was arrested on Saturday, July 7 at 2:48 a.m. and charged with domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone, and domestic simple assault. According to police Tavares fought with his wife, pushed her down when she attempted to leaver their home, and took her cell phone when she threatened to call police. Tavares was arraigned by bail commissioner and released on $1,000 personal recognizance later that day.
Violation of a No Contact Order
- Melissa S. Helger, 27, of 108 Liberty St. Apt 2, Fall River, MA, was arrested on Sunday, July 8 at 2:05 a.m. and charged with violating a no contact order.
- Dorothy Coelho, 54, of 1100 Stafford Road, Apt. 3, Tiverton, was arrested on Sunday, July 8 at 7 p.m. and charged with violating a no contact order.
- Steven D. Gendreau, 29, of 11 Harvest Hill Road Westport, MA, was arrested on Tuesday, July 10 at 10:57 a.m. and charged with violating a no contact order.
Arrested On Multiple Domestic Charges
Dale Barry Wilson, 47, of 29, Kaufman Road, Tiverton, was arrested on Sunday, July 8 at 11:30 p.m. and charged with domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone, domestic disorderly conduct, and domestic larceny. Officers responded for a report of a domestic, and learned that Wilson had left the scene before police arrived. Wilson’s wife alleged that an argument between she and Wilson had escalated and he went into their room and began throwing her clothes around. She also claimed he went into the basement and damaged a shelving unit. When she threatened to call police, Wilson allegedly grabbed her cell phone from the counter and took it with him when he left the house. East Providence Police apprehended Wilson and transported him to Tiverton Police headquarters.
